• Residents living in informal settlements tend to face exclusion from public facilities and are very vulnerable to the natural elements, crime and disease.
• Informal settlements tend to lack access to basic social facilities such as clinics, libraries, schools and sporting facilities.
• Within the townships most of the residents are living in small corrugated iron shacks measuring about 9ft x 9ft.
• Few have running water in their homes and most are forced to share outside sanitation facilities.
• There are several difficulties that arise from living in these inadequate conditions such as leaks, cold and damp, infestations, overcrowding, lack of security and risk of fire.
• This living environment also contributes to a wide range of health problems including respiratory infections, diarrheal diseases and chronic diseases.
