Over 20% of the population in South Africa is unemployed; however within the townships the unemployment rate is much higher at an average rate of 50%.  Unemployment is typically associated with social challenges such as poverty, crime, violence, social instability of households, lack of medical services and knowledge, overpopulation and alcohol abuse.

Local Labour

Our construction work continues year round with a local labour force made up mainly of township residents. We employ formerly unemployed residents of the township in which we are working.

This gives an opportunity for many long-term unemployed people to not only gain employment, but also to have the opportunity of learning a trade from the other skilled members of the team.

Skills Training

We initiated our Skills Training Programme in 2009. We work in partnership with three other organisations who are professional service providers; Tjeka Training, Apex Empowerment, and Learn to Earn.

Our Skills Training Programme includes training in several construction disciplines including plumbing, bricklaying, carpentry, plastering, painting, roofing and electrical.

Skills’ training brings three main benefits; employment, improved skills and better quality construction.

Ultimately the community is the main benefactor as they have employment enhancement opportunities, and the beneficiary family will benefit with a better quality house and improved delivery.
