“Nurture your tree as you would your own family” was the motto of the day!
On the 7th July, Mellon Housing Initiative (MHI), Food and Trees for Africa and The Ackerman Family Foundation all came together to donate trees to over 100 community members of Mbekwen in Paarl. MHI and the Ackerman Family Foundation together donated the trees to the community. Food and Trees for Africa met with the community a week ago to explain the process and to teach them how to plant and look after their trees.
Suzanne Ackerman Berman from the Ackerman Family Foundation spoke to the community and praised them on how beautiful their homes and surrounding areas look. She also made a commitment to help fund more trees in the area for the rest of the community.
The delighted community members collected their trees and made their way back to their houses where they started to plant. There was definitely a buzz in the Township as people were busy digging and watering the new addition to their new homes!
Speakers at the event were Suzanne Ackerman Berman from the Ackerman Family Foundation, Noeki Gous from MHI and Lucky Xaba from Food and Trees for Africa. Entertainment was provided by the Mbekweni Gum Boot Dancers.
Mellon Housing Initiative would like to take this opportunity to thank The Ackerman Family Foundation for their continued support of the charity and their very generous donation to the Mbekweni Community. We would also like to thank Food and Trees for Africa for their help and support. Our partnership with Food and Trees for Africa has only just begun and we are very excited about working with them more in the future.
