Niall Mellon is to be honoured with the Humanitarian Award at the 2010 Meteor Ireland Music Awards together with a donation of €100,000. The Meteor Ireland Music Awards will be held 19th February at the RDS.
Previous recipients of the Humanitarian Award and donations are Mary Donohue (Rose Project Founder), Sir Elton John, Christina Noble, Bono, Sister Stanislaus Kennedy, Adi Roche, Fr. Peter Mc Verry, Paul Brady (Belvedere Youth Club) and Fr. Shay Cullen.
Niall will receive the award on the night in recognition of his tireless work with the help of volunteers, in providing homes for the people of South Africa over the past 8 years. Since he started the charity Niall Mellon has never taken any salary or payment for his role as Chief Executive. He says his aim has been to “inspire and encourage a spirit of volunteerism”. Niall said: “I am particularly proud of the role Irish people have played in supporting this project”.
The Niall Mellon 1 week Building Blitz has now become a permanent part of the Irish charity calendar. The efforts of Niall and all the volunteers who have supported him have been recognised at the highest levels around the world. Niall's message has been the same since he started – “every one of us can make a difference.”
The Niall Mellon Township Trust is currently recruiting volunteers for their next Building Blitz, which will take place from 13-20th November in Cape Town, South Africa.
