The Longford marathon kicked off on Saturday and ran all through the day on Sunday with the starting point at St. Christopher’s, Battery Road, Longford, with a 3 mile breakfast run around Longford Town.
All runners could nominate their charity of choice and whether they wished to do a relay, half marathon or full marathon. Around 70 Niall Mellon volunteers braved the storm and strut their stuff to raise funds for their impending trip.
The criac was mighty with St. Mel's College providing food and beverages for the hungry. All foods and beverages were donated by the local business in Longford. Pat the Baker being the main sponsor.
Longford town seemed to have just one thing on its mind and that was to embrace all the running visitors and give them the time of their lives. All local bands, musicans and dancers lined the streets to provide entertainment and encourage the runners to get to the finishing line. Niall Mellon volunteers came from Mayo, Longford, Cavan and Roscommon to join in the marathon. Liam Fenelon is one of the main organizers of the event and is a Niall Mellon enthusiast, travelling on his second trip to South Africa in November. Liam is hoping that this event will provide an opportunity for all volunteers travelling to South Africa a fundraising opportunity that will grow year on year
