The Niall Mellon Township Trust was established by Niall Mellon in 2002 with the aim of providing quality social housing for the impoverished communities in the townships of South Africa. We operate a year-round house building programme and are the largest charity provider of quality social housing in South Africa, having built 15,000 homes to-date. Headquartered in Ireland, the charity has offices in South Africa and the US.
Over 10,000 people have volunteered with the charity to date.
- In 2009 over 3,500 volunteers worked with us, 2,000 South Africans and 1,500 Irish volunteers.
- The charity has created employment for 2,000 people from the local townships and is heavily involved in training and up-skilling.
- We are currently building in 23 townships, building 1 in every 3/4 new homes in Cape Town and 1 in every 8/10 new homes in Gauteng.
- We are currently working on 36 different housing projects in South Africa.
- The charity also works closely with the South African Government and receives funding from Irish Aid.
- It is now getting significant international recognition for its approach to delivering quality social housing.
- In 2007, Niall Mellon targeted the US Administration to support the charity. Due to the fact that housing was not a primary objective of USAID, Niall Mellon set about changing policy. As a result, a law (Appropriations Bill) was subsequently passed in Congress on 2nd February 2009, directing USAID to consider the Niall Mellon Township Trust specifically for future funding.
- The passing of this legislation represented a milestone achievement for the charity in its objective to provide housing for the poor.
