Getting Mucky with the Niall Mellon Township Trust

Runners go a muck

Volunteering Overseas StudentsMuckersRun a Muck PigCheck out some pictures from the Run a Muck challenge held on the 14th May 2011. The morning stayed dry for a thankful 500 participants who got down and dirty last May (14th May) on veteran volunteer Louis Robinson’s land for the charity’s Run a Muck Challenge. The runners climbed over man made and natural obstacles including bale "jumps", net scrambles, tarzan swings, bridges, ditches, streams, tyres and tunnels designed to test the strongest of characters all to help in raising funds for the November blitz. Congrats to everyone particularly those who managed to complete the course dresses as nuns, jockeys and in nightwear!! For those spectating there was plenty of action off course – a bouncy castle & face painting for the children, a pig on a spit to keep any hunger at bay and of course no charity event would be complete without the shack village.  It was good to see many people gain an insight into how people live in the townships; the three shacks assembled by Louis and his team were an excellent representation of what living is like for those in the townships of South Africa.

Niall Mellon who was one of the runners said “We were absolutely thrilled with this event. So many people pull out all the stops to raise funds to come with us on a life changing experience building houses for those currently living in the squalor of the townships throughout South Africa. In order to help the many people who give so much to the charity we organised this event so the volunteers could run in it and help raise their building blitz funding. Between the mucky and believe me it was an exceptionally mucky course, the entertainment for the children and the pig on the spit. It was a fantastic day and not for the faint hearted!  I don’t think any amount of Persil will get my clothes back to the state they were originally in!!”.
