I decided to get involved with NMTT when I heard about what great work they do for people living in impoverished communities. It’s hard not get enthusiastic about the work they do when you meet their dedicated team of staff and volunteers!

What I like about the NMTT is that there is a real sense of achievement associated with the building blitz week. I love that the volunteers get to see the seeds of their hard work grow, develop and blossom into a wonderful house for a South African family. Living in the Western world, one can so easily take things for granted without realising that people live elsewhere without even basic sanitation and a roof over their head. Building a house may not make a difference to a whole country, but it makes a difference to one family. Even the biggest journey starts with a single step.

‘Freedom Park’ - Although I found the name so contradictory, I couldn’t ignore his stories. He said it was a life changing experience. My brother-in-law’s chronicles of 1,000-strong army of Irish builders, working for change in South Africa, really stirred me into action. I wanted to do something too.

I travelled to Cape Town with the Trust in November 2008 on their 7th annual building blitz. My experiences there were so profound that I still find them difficult to talk about. The work ethic on site was, to say the least, awe inspiring. Instead of trying to do the efforts of the Trust justice, when asked about my experiences, I simply tell people to go out, raise the €5,000 sponsorship and discover their own encouragement and inspiration in the strength of the communities they’ll be working alongside. ‘Each one -Teach one’!

Research showed that the children of beneficiaries of the homes being built by the Trust are more likely to attend school, and it was this connection that encouraged the company I work for to get involved. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s Corporate Social Responsibility Committee’s strategic goals were completely in line with the work the Trust was doing, so it was an almost inevitable partnership. This year we have shipped approximately 4½ tonnes of educational and trade publications to Khayelitsha’s community schools. I hope my good fortune allows me continued involvement with Niall and the work he’s doing.
