The garden was a busy spot today! Our team of 80 were joined by 12 builders and 8 painters at what resembles a building site rather than a garden! Our maze was difficult to get around by the end of the day, our 'baby elephant' and duo of crocodiles were drying in the sun and our artwork animals made their way to the garden from the point where our art team had painted them. Swings, slides and stone forts all rose from the rubble and the noise of consaws began to give rise to a very interesting water feature. A pleasant silence fell on the vegetable garden for a brief period when the wracher plate finished its work. THe building, sawing and wheelbarrowing stopped and soil and compost were raked carefully into place, waiting for the children to come tomorrow to plant seeds and plants. 30 children joined our team to help Maria and Dawn to create wonderful panels of colour and pattern to decorate the inside of the community hall. Our team are incredible - instead of winding down as the day onsite comes towards an end, they step up the pace, drop a gear, and barrows, mixers and spades seem to work even faster. Yesterday was a typical example! The wad of grass arrived at 4.40 as other teams streamed past the railing heading for the buses. The gardeners, having prepared all afternoon for the arrival of the grass, began taking the rolls of grass off the truck before he even had the tail down, and running and racing for the next 30 minutes they had all the grass in place before getting the last possible bus from the site! Exhausted but pleased they headed off for a first beer - an unbelievable day's work by an unbelievable bunch of people.
