Niall Mellon Township Trust - Building Blitz 2011
Posted by Sarah Nolan on 16 Nov 11
Well we’re over half way through the Blitz and I have to say it’s been the best experience of my life so far. The days are long, we’re up at six and in bed fairly late but even though we should all be wrecked, once we’re on site we’re full of energy. We have had the opportunity to visit several shacks and a crèche and it was really an eye-opening experience. It’s one thing to look at a picture but when you walk into a shack the heat hits you and you can smell the and feel the flies everywhere its a completely different story.
Unfortunately, the reality is that there are over six thousand people living here in Witsand and most of those live in shacks, about half the size of our hotel room. There is no electricity and water has to be carried from taps located around the township.
Everyone here is pushing their limits and working unbelievably hard to get the work done. Myself and the rest of ‘Teen Africa’ are on the Maroon team and we have to have fourteen houses completed by the end of the week. The week so far has been fun as well. As the ‘first timers’ we’re the targets of most of the jokes but all you need is a Niall Mellon name tag to start a conversation with somebody you’ve never met before. All of the volunteers are like one big community. We are working hard and its tough work but it is so worth it for what we are doing for the beneficiary families.
